A body that holds a mind and a soul.
I ship the body. You bring the rest.
A digital self is three things, not one. soma∞ ships the body — the backend, the nerve that carries signal, the shared infrastructure. The mind and soul are built on top: intelligence functions and human-connection functions. soma∞ provides a reference mind and soul, but the design is explicit: anyone can build their own. Your mind. Your soul. Your body, shared.
The substrate. Event bus, AI gateway, patterns database, the nerve that carries every signal, the skin that renders, the marrow every function is built on. Three components. Boring on purpose. Never the thing you notice — always the thing that makes everything else possible.
Intelligence. Functions that classify, reason, filter, and surface patterns. Reading the world, making sense of it, deciding what matters. soma∞ ships a reference mind; the design invites you to replace it with your own. Build functions that think the way you think.
Connection and interiority. Functions that hold relationships, presence, reflection, and embodied awareness. The parts that reach toward other people and toward yourself. soma∞ ships a reference soul; the design invites you to build one that fits your life.
Every event carries an emotion. Not decoration — chemistry. These are the twelve states the body runs on, each with its own name, its own spec, and its own signature — a frozen spectrum of how it moves. Functions run on one or more emotion. The body thinks in these.
The spine. Every signal from every source passes through it. Ingests, classifies, routes, acts. Every event carries an emotion; every action leaves a trace. What the body feels, nerve is how it feels it. What the body decides, nerve is how it decides.
What the body shows to the world. Turns moments, feelings, and classified events into single pages where color is the primary data and content is a supporting voice. The boundary between the interior life and what is shared — controlled, expressive, yours.
Not a function you see — the structural layer every function is built on. AI gateway with local and remote routing. Event bus. Patterns database. Observability. Hammered once, hard. Used by everything. What the body is made of, underneath.
Each function is a specific capacity the body runs. soma∞ ships eight reference functions for v1 — four in the mind circle, four in the soul circle — paired with four more in v2 and unlimited more from anyone who wants to build their own. Each function lives in exactly one circle. The body is shared. The mind and soul are yours.
Reads ambient signal — what's playing, what's been happening, sleep and activity from vitals, the colors breath has been logging, presence from den. Doesn't judge any of it. Tunes the rest of the body to where you are. Rage is a legitimate register. So is grief. So is joy. The body's job is to meet you there, not move you somewhere else.
The function of creation. Holds every idea captured, every project in-flight, every thing shipped, every thing archived. The bridge between mind and body — thinking something is not the same as making it, and making is how the rest of the body earns its keep. The work is the point.
Watches voidlab and every self-hosted service. Certs expiring, disks filling, backups that didn't complete, services that quietly crashed. Groups related issues instead of paging on each one. The only function allowed to wake me up — and only when it has earned it.
Watches GitHub, Hacker News, Lobsters, selected subreddits, and Mastodon for things in my actual interest window — not a firehose, a filter. Daily digest with the five things actually worth reading, one-line summaries, full links. Kills doomscroll by replacing it.
The heart pumps. Here, what it pumps is connection. A quiet ledger of the people I love and the ones I want to keep close. Gentle prompts when the silence has gone on longer than I'd want. No streaks, no scoring — those cheapen the thing. The most tender part of the body, on purpose.
A journal that meets me where I am. Voice memo, text, or a color picked from the palette on a day I don't have words. Weekly and monthly reflections generated from the raw entries. Private by default. The one function that listens without classifying.
Tracks lifts, sleep, resting heart rate, weight — pulls from whatever wearable already has the data. Surfaces trends gently, flags regressions early, writes a weekly body-report with one number that matters and one thing to try next week.
Friends' Steam, Xbox, and Discord activity in one quiet place. Who's online, what they're playing, who's been AFK long enough that a "hey" would land. Optional stat tracking for the games that matter — no spreadsheet required.
A news function that knows what I actually care about and what I've explicitly said I don't. Local, weather-adjacent, tech, and two or three long-running stories. One morning briefing. No outrage amplification. No "breaking" for things that aren't.
Watches pollen counts, air quality, wildfire smoke, and the weather patterns that usually precede a bad day. Keeps a log so patterns over years are legible — which weeks are reliably rough, which triggers emerged.
Not budgeting — awareness. Monthly recurring charges, annual renewals sneaking up, a weekly "here's where it went" summary. Flags the subscription that silently doubled. Read-only, never touches accounts.
The home dashboard that doesn't feel like a dashboard. Who's home, what's running, bills due, filters that need changing, the car's miles since last service. Pulls from Home Assistant, calendars, manual notes. Meant for the whole household, not just me.
The body doesn't make every day look the same. It reads the day you're actually having and behaves accordingly. Two scans, same system, different registers.
Twenty years of building things has taught me that the tools we use shape the thoughts we're able to have. Most of mine were built for someone else. soma∞ is an attempt to build infrastructure that fits the particular way I see — color-coded, pattern-hungry, quietly synesthetic — and then let that shape every piece of work, play, and life that flows through it.
It is a body. Mind, soul, and the physical — held together in one system, in one vocabulary, under one hand. A mirror, assembled slowly, that reflects back what it finds.
What I ship is the body. The mind and the soul are built on top, and the design is explicit: I built mine; yours should be yours. Fork the repo, write your own functions, let the body carry signal the way you need it carried. soma∞ is open infrastructure for a digital self, not a product.
The premise is simple: signal is everywhere, and the bottleneck isn't collecting it, it's perceiving it well. Every function is built by hand. Every emotion is a different chemistry. Every signal passes through something that is yours before it reaches you. The era we're moving through will extend the people who build their own instruments and flatten the people who don't.
It's also built to hold the full range. The quiet mornings and the sharp ones. The growth and the grief. The things worth being calm about and the things worth being furious about. A system that only knows how to be soft would be dishonest about how one actually moves through a life.
This scales to one person, over a lifetime — repeated as many times as there are people who find the shape useful. A community of bodies, each hosting its own mind and soul, sharing the substrate.
